During our short trip to San Francisco, we visited Alcatraz Island, which served as a maximum-security federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963. I decided it merited its own post since these photos were entirely different from that of my San Francisco collection.
I tried to convey the mood most likely felt during those years, though, I will say, the National Park Service has done a great job at preserving and presenting the prison as it is.
